Make Your Library Your Own!

If you’ve been to one of our author visits, dance classes, or to Friday Night Jazz, you know how much we love to have programs here at the library.

Now is your chance to tell us what kinds of programs for adults you’d like to see in the future!

Yoga?  Energy conservation?  Advanced paper plane design?  It’s all up to you!

Please take a moment to fill out our very short survey.  The results will be immensely helpful as we begin to create programs to be held in the new library.

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month

If you don’t have a card for West Palm Beach Public Library, or you’ve lost your card, this is the perfect time to come in.  This month, replacement cards are free!

If you don’t yet have a library card, all we need is a picture ID to issue one to you.

Don’t live in the city of West Palm Beach?  No problem!  Anyone who lives, works, or plays in West Palm Beach is not only allowed and encouraged to apply for a library card.

Pressed for time?  No worries!  You can apply for a card online, and just pick it up when you’re able to come in.  (Make sure to bring your ID.)

While you’re here, check out a book or a movie, or enjoy one of our programs.  Our current event calendar can be found here.

The Best Things In Life Are Free!

Everyone loves free stuff!

This week, Kiplinger.com published its “Fabulous Freebies 2008” article, highlighting some fantastic free resources, such as free office software, free diet and fitness help, free furniture, and even free language lessons!

As the authors mention, one of your best free resources is the public library.  It’s always free to check out books, movies, and music, and our programs are free as well.  Check out our event calendar to see what’s going on!

Dancing with the Librarians

Well, the season for Dancing with the Stars is over, so now what do you do? Hmm, I think I know the answer to this one – you can come out to the West Palm Beach Public Library and learn how to dance for yourself!

‘Tis true, the world’s most awesome library is hosting free Argentine Tango dance classes at the library in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. George, from Exclusively Argentine Tango @ George’s will be here the first three Thursdays in September (the 4th, 11th, and 18th) from 6:00 to 8:00 pm to teach us how to dance!

So, if you think you can dance (or not) come out to the library and take advantage of this wonderful program!

Beat The Heat With A Cool Flick…For Free!

Now that it’s almost July, every day is hotter and more humid than the one that came before.  That’s the price we pay for living in tropical paradise!  Why not take a break and relax in the comfort of your own home with a tall glass of lemonade and a movie?

Don’t know what to watch?  Have no fear!  West Palm Beach Public Library has a huge collection of DVDs, including many selections from the American Film Institute’s “100 Years, 100 Movies,”  which includes the best of the best across all genres.  You can take them home for seven days, and there’s no cost!

Want something lighthearted and musical?  Pick up Singin’ in the Rain (#5), The Wizard of Oz (#10), or Some Like It Hot (#22).

Perhaps you’re in the mood for an epic.  Lawrence of Arabia (#7), Spartacus (#81), and Ben-Hur (#100) all made the list.

Maybe you’d like to pull the blinds, turn off the lights, and watch something scary.  Try Vertigo (#9), Psycho (#14), Rear Window (#48), Jaws (#56), The Silence of the Lambs (#74), or The Sixth Sense (#89).

Dramas like Citizen Kane (#1), The Godfather (#2), Casablanca (#3), Apocalypse Now (#30), and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (#33), make up a large portion of the list, but several comedies are included, such as Annie Hall (#35), Tootsie (#69), and Toy Story (#99).

Science fiction fans might want to check out Star Wars (#13), 2001: A Space Odyssey (#15), E. T. The Extraterrestrial (#24), or Blade Runner (#97).

Some of my personal favorites from the list are All About Eve (#28), Cabaret (#63), Raiders of the Lost Ark (#66), The Shawshank Redemption (#72), Forrest Gump (#76), and Sophie’s Choice (#91).

Still not sure what to watch?  Check out another “best of” list, then either search our online catalog, or ask a reference librarian if we have it in our collection.

Do you have a favorite movie that helps you forget about the heat?  Let us know what it is.  If we don’t have it in our collection, tell us why we should consider purchasing it.

If you want to get out of the house for a free movie, join us for iCINEMA: Independent and International Films @ Your Library, on July 20 and August 17, from 2 to 3:30 PM.

Summer Reading: It’s Not Just for Kids!

The kids aren’t the only ones having fun at the library this summer.  Be sure to drop by the reference desk and sign up for our Adult Summer Reading Program!  Not only do we have a fantastic program each week, but every time you finish a book, you can fill out an entry form to be entered into a weekly drawing for fabulous prizes.

No idea what to read this summer?  Fear not!  Ask a reference librarian for a recommendation, or check out one of these summer reading lists:

Without intending to, I have found myself simultaniously reading three very different books about being on the coast.  I’m listening to Duma Key by Stephen King in my car, reading On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan while I’m on a break at work, and I’m leafing through Cottages on the Coast: Fair Harbors and Secret Shores by Linda Leigh Paul at home.

If you’ve got any favorite summer reads, leave a comment or stop by the reference desk and let us know!

Earth Day: Going Green @ the Library

Being a reference librarian is always full of surprises (some better than others).  So, I was looking up some information for one of our patrons and I stumbled upon a link that linked to a link and there I was on Danny Seo’s blog – which was very interesting and very relevant for the upcoming Earth Day on April 22.  It’s loaded with pictures and ideas for decorating and being Earth-friendly at the same time!  It also has contests and pictures of the ongoing transformation of his new, old home.

Speaking of Earth Day, did you get to our very own Book Goddess’ Latest and Greatest: Go Green for Earth Day book talk?  Check out her blog and get a list of books on the subject available at the West Palm Beach Public Library.  The next Latest and Greatest is on Thursday, May 15th from 12:15 to 12:30 where she will feature books on travel!

See you @ the library,

Annya

Wow,  I can’t believe Friday Night Jazz has started again!  Last Friday marked the beginning of our 4th season for this event.  As usual, the music, food and wine was spectacular!

Kit Stewart, our featured artist, had a beautiful voice and has been singing since she was 3 years old.  The food and wine from Gourmet Galaxy was delicious.

Next month, Lou Columbo will be here with his big band!  Come see him April 11th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

Hope to see you at Friday Night Jazz!

Computer Classes Coming Up

FYI

We have three computer classes coming up in the next couple of weeks.

  1. Internet 1: Thursday, October 29 10:00 – 11:30 am
  2. Beginning PowerPoint: Monday, October 29 6:00 – 8:00 pm
  3. Internet 2: Tuesday, October 30 10:00 – 11:30 am

I do not have a lot of classes planned for November and December as I have found from experience that people are not interested during the holidays. I am planning a couple of things though. I have a wonderful volunteer who will be doing a “Get that Job” class on Saturday, November 10. It’s a great class which will include learning how to not only put your resume online, but what you need to include to create a resume that will stand out. To see what else is being offered the next few months, check our website or our events calendar.

Got Techno-stress?

Do you suffer from back pain, neck pain, headaches or carpal tunnel syndrome? Improper posture can do a number on your health. Since most of us spend a good portion of our lives in front of a computer, we are especially susceptible to these symptoms.

Dr. Mark W. Ashley will be coming out to the library to help us learn how to combat techno-stress in our Chiropractic Care and Ergonomics Series. He will be here October 3rd, November 7th, and December 5th, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm to lecture about a variety of topics to help find relief from improper posture.
