Getting Healthy through Education and Enlightenment

Hello again.   I recently was privileged to spend a wonderful week at the Hippocrates Health Institute located right here in West Palm Beach (http://www.hippocratesinst.org).  I was fortunate to WIN a complimentary week’s stay as a terrific door prize during their RawFest Celebration Day last October!  At HHI, we learned how to optimize our health through “the 4 strong legs of the table”: nutrition, exercise, emotional attentiveness, and spiritual awareness.  Therapeutic massages, mineral salt and other pools, breathing techniques, fantastic trainers of oriental health exercises, chi gong, yoga, pilates, NIA exercise, circle dance, meditation, visualization techniques, reflexology, sprouting, wheatgrass growing and juicing, skin care, and much nutritional information filled a very rewarding (and pampered) week.

Educational resources for improved healthful living are abundant these days, and we are privileged to carry many outstanding books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, and electronic resources in our library that relate to the very worthwhile topics covered at Hippocrates.  In our beautiful new library building at 411 Clematis Street, on the first floor, you will find excellent new materials in our “Mind, Body, Spirit” and “Health” sections.  The book You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay was highly recommended at HHI, and it can be found in several formats in our library collection.  A  few other highly recommended reading materials include:

acid alkaline food guideThe acid alkaline food guide : a quick reference to foods & their effect on pH levels / Susan E. Brown, Larry Trivieri, Jr. –  an excellent description of the nutritional aspects of acid-based imbalances, diet therapy, and hydrogen-ion concentration

May is Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month!

Millions of Americans are at risk for developing Osteoporosis.  Although there are many ways we can prevent bone loss, it’s also important for older adults to have bone density tests.

Through a grant with the Quantum Foundation, the library is offering a free Osteoporosis screening Tuesday, May 19, at 11am in the Clematis Room on the 3rd floor.  It’s quick and painless.

If you’re interested in improving your bone health, the library has books such as The Bone Density Program: 6 Weeks to Strong Bones and a Healthy Body by George J. Kessler.  If you come for your free osteoporosis screening, stop by the reference desk to see what materials we have available.

We’ve Got Wi-Fi!

For those of us with laptops, finding free wireless Internet service is priceless.

Starting today, the library’s wi-fi is back!  We’ve got a dependable, strong signal that you can use even in the courtyard between City Hall and the library.  You may even be able to sit outside City Cafe and surf the ‘Net.

If you bring your wireless-enabled laptop into the library, all you need to do is start up the computer and it should automatically pick up the wireless signal.  There’s no log-in or password.  It’s easy to use, and there are no charges or time restrictions!

From Homer to Hip-Hop – Reinventing the Classics

aquila-theatre

Ancient classical studies was not exactly my forte in high school so reading the required text of Homer’s Iliad was not something I was entirely excited about.  However a free program series presented by Page and Stage, an in-depth partnership between the West Palm Beach Public Library and New York’s Aquila Theatre, will definitely raise the bar in my intellectual thinking!  This innovative program series explores Homer’s Iliad through the perspective of the theme: From Homer to Hip-Hop – Reinventing the Classics and exploring the power of the Iliad in today’s modern world.

One of the programs scheduled is a live, free performance of Aquila Theatre’s production of Homer’s Iliad: Book One.  This production premiered at New York’s Lincoln Center and was noted by the New York Times as a “performance of staggering power…stunning, stirring, and memorable theatrical experience.”  In addition to the performance play the actors will be leading an acting workshop to discuss the staging of classical plays.  For those not familiar with the Aquila Theatre, its actors perform productions in a modern, hip format so I am truly excited about attending this event.

The Acting Workshop is scheduled on Tuesday, May 5th from 5:00-6:00pm in the Clematis Room and the performance play with post-discussion is also scheduled on Tuesday, May 5th from 6:30-8:00pm.  To be held in the Auditorium.

Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
