Fit and the City
Not only am I thrilled to be working in such an amazing new library and experiencing the satisfaction of a successful move but I am equally pleased that I can finally get back to a normal exercise routine! For the past month or so I have been so focused in working each day alongside other staff to prepare the new City Center Library for opening day that I have completely neglected the gym and my healthy eating habits. Fast food and mini Snicker bars have become my new best friends!
However an exciting program being held this Saturday, April 18th, will encourage me to get back to a healthier lifestyle. The West Palm Beach Public Library is welcoming 2008 Idea Fitness Instructor of the Year and award-winning author, Shirley Archer as she presents “Fit and the City: Celebrating Wellness in West Palm Beach.”
Ms. Archer has been a wellness educator of the Stanford Health Improvement Program and she specializes in creating wellness at work and teaching stress management techniques like office exercises, meditation, and visualization. Oh boy, do I need this and not a minute too soon!
So be sure to join me (I’ll be the one eating the mini Snicker bar) at this informative event and learn how you can reach your personal best!

Shirley Archer will be lecturing on Saturday, April 18th from 10:00-11:00am in the Library Auditorium located on the 3rd floor. Free and open to the public.

Sneak Preview of the New Library
The books are on the shelves, the computers are in place, and the activities are planned. We’re almost ready to open! I am loving our new home, and I can’t wait to see what our patrons will think. Here are a few photos of us library staff in our new diggs.
Let’s go floor by floor…
On the 1st floor, we have new books arranged by popular topics, like Parenting, Just for Laughs, and Christian Fiction. This area is bright and attractive, and avid readers will feel like a kid in a candy store.

Doris and Monica have put a lot of time into arranging book dislays.

All Doris needs here is a latte, right? Not to worry, the cafe is due to open soon!

The 2nd floor is for the Teen Source and Technology.

DJ and LaShonda are trying out the computer lab.

Here, Eric is testing a computer with privacy screens.

KidSpace is located on the 3rd floor.

Miss Judy and Miss Jeanne are “safety checking” the fun furniture in the children’s area.

These red chairs can actually double as rocking horses!

The 4th floor is almost as big as a football field. We have the main fiction and non-fiction collections up here, and the Reference & Information desk, which is where I’ll be.

Here I am in the Florida Room. I’ve found some really interesting gems in here, like a real treasure map – of sunken treasure ships along Florida’s coast.

And here’s Annya reading in one of the best spots around. Huge windows provide plenty of natural light plus a view down Clematis Street, including a corner of the Intracoastal.

OK, those are all the photos for today, but there is still much more to see. So be sure to visit next week when we open!
