Food, Words, and a Good Cause: These are a Few of My Favorite Things
Ending world hunger is something that is important to a lot of us. Ending world hunger with words, now that’s especially interesting to a librarian (apart from my obvious fondness for The Sound of Music).
Apparently you can end world hunger and learn some new words. It’s true, I tried it. And it’s simple. You don’t have to log in, create a user id, yada yada yada. Just go to freerice.com and answer the question. That’s it. For each word you get right the sponsors of the site donate 20 grains of rice through the UN World Food Program. Don’t worry, they won’t take back grains of rice for wrong answers!
Oh, and if you are looking for ways to expand your vocabulary – you could always get a book at your library!
Hope to see you @ your favorite library!

Louder than Life
Gosh, it’s been awhile since I’ve posted. This past Saturday we had an amazing event. Ray Dominguez of Write Side Poets came to the library for is Louder than Life event. It was AMAZING! About 50 teens and parents showed up for the poetry slam competition. Ray was being followed by an independent filming company for an upcoming HBO Special on poetry and teens. How cool is that?!? Check out the pics from the event, too!

Get Ready for Summer!
With all the talk of rising gas prices, airlines increasing fares, and never-ending water restrictions, I still believe summer in South Florida can be filled with plenty of fun and inexpensive activities.
One of my favorite summer pastimes is cooking on the grill with family and friends. Of course my menu repertoire is somewhat limited so I will be sure to check-out the many barbeque or grilling cookbooks available from the West Palm Beach Public Library.
And yes, I will be sunning on the beach so now is the time I need to borrow those exercise and fitness books to get back into bathing suit shape!
Or how about visiting the West Palm Beach Public Library and participating in our many Children and Adult Summer Programs? My calendar is already booked with exciting events and craft activities for the next few months. So be sure to visit the Events Calendar on the library’s website and join us for some summer fun!

Enjoy Indiana Jones flicks or other films by Spielberg?
Ever since I heard Steven Spielberg and George Lucas were collaborating on a fourth Indiana Jones film I have been eagerly anticipating its release. The movie “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” is now set to open in theaters May 22nd. So take out your fedora hat from the back of the closet and before you visit the theaters for the new release come to the West Palm Beach Public Library and check-out the previous three Indiana Jones movies available in DVD.
The West Palm Beach Public Library also owns many other Steven Spielberg films such as “ET: the Extra Terrestrial“, or “Back to the Future.” Also in the library’s collection you will find “Jurassic Park“, “Catch Me if You Can“, or the classic “Schindler’s List.” More recent films include “Letters from Iwo Jima” or the DVD “Flags of Our Fathers.”
If Spielberg movies are not your style remember the library owns hundreds of other DVD’s available for check-out. From the library’s online catalog you can search for titles of movies you might be interested in borrowing.

Meet the Author: John Manrique
Drop by the library Wednesday, May 7th at 6:30 pm and meet author John Manrique. Manrique will be here to talk about his debut book, Ocean Raton. The story is takes place in the Fort Lauderdale area and is a satire that touches on the culture of South Florida and the 2007 real estate bubble- something we can all relate to!
The Classic Bookshop will be here once again to sell autographed copies of the book. Come out and hear about the book, ask questions, and get a signed copy!
See you @ the library,
Annya
